West Midlands logo small Transport and congestion on the roads in the West Midlands is understandably a major issue raised in the campaigns of all candidates. Motorcycle Action Group have for many decades promoted the positive benefits of motorcycles as part of the solution to congestion. If you are elected as Mayor, what will you do to promote a modal shift to powered two wheelers?

Pete Durnell

I believe the key is to encourage all alternatives to cars, including the metro, buses and cycles. I fully support that motorcycle use helps ease congestion, but equally recognise the problem cannot be solved by one mode of transport. A holistic transport model is required across the seven constituent councils and I will work with multi partners to ensure motor vehicle users have a greater input into the design of future transport plans.

Air Quality is another important topic in light of recently reported threats of fines from the EU. Motorcycle Action Group promotes the positive effects on reducing air pollution that are realised by a modal shift to motorcycles. What will be your policy towards motorcycles with respect to air quality? Will you introduce low emission zone charging and if so will motorcycles be exempt?

Pete Durnell

We do not support the concept of regressive taxes such as green levies and emission zones as all evidence suggests these always hit the lowest paid hardest. We absolutely recognise the issues associated with air pollution but would look to tackle them in different ways.

There have been recent issues around antisocial behaviour by hooligans that happen to choose motorcycles as the means to their ends. Motorcycle Action Group clearly condemn this kind of behaviour and have offered to work with Police and Councils in any way possible to tackle the issue. However, the resulting injunctions introduced by the Councils to combat the issue have angered many legitimate motorcyclists who feel they have been criminalised under these injunctions. What will be your policy to deal with this issue?

Pete Durnell

I believe it is wrong and unfair to penalise whole groups when most of them are innocent. I will work closely with the Police and Crime Commissioner, council leaders and the MAG to develop a fair and consistent policy, and then to ensure that it is applied similarly.

Motorcycle theft statistics nationally are appalling with as many as 70 motorcycles being stolen every day in the UK. What policies /action will you take in the West Midlands Combined Authority to combat this national issue in our region?

Pete Durnell

It is a huge problem which has been ignored for too long. Councils must be encouraged to install secure fixing points across region. I believe these have been successful trialed London and provide secure points to attach the motorbike. High quality chains should always be used, wherever possible securing the frame of the bike.

Across the 7 Councils making up the WMCA there are varying policies with regards to motorcycle access to bus lanes. MAG has campaigned for PTW access to all bus lanes for many years. What will you do as West Midlands Mayor to ensure a consistent policy towards bus lane access across all 7 Councils?

Pete Durnell

UKIP is the party of common sense, and it makes good sense to allow motorcycles access to all bus lanes. However, I also believe in direct democracy and would prefer council leaders to implement the will of their council members. I would encourage, but wouldn't use my position if elected to enforce this.

Light segregation furniture for cycle lanes (referred to as Armadillos, Orcas etc) have been proven to be trip hazards to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. MAG supports anything that increases safety for any vulnerable road user group, but not at the cost of increased risk to motorcyclists on the roads. Can you confirm that if you are elected as Mayor you would block any attempt to introduce light segregation schemes or any other cycling segregation that reduces road space available to motorcyclists, thus increasing risk for PTW riders?

Pete Durnell

I am concerned with the safety issue you have raised. If elected I would ask the Transport Delivery Committee of the WMCA to bring together representatives of vulnerable road user groups to find a safe, fair and consistent approach across our region.

If elected Mayor will you attend and support Motorcycle Action Group's annual event to promote the benefits of motorcycling which we are planning to hold at Cannon Hill Park in July?

Pete Durnell

Absolutely. As stated previously I believe in a bottom up approach and will want users to have input into any future WMCA transport plans.

Will you show your support for motorcycling and determination to uphold the rights of motorcyclists by becoming a member of Motorcycle Action Group?

Pete Durnell

As an elected representative I would want to represent the views of transport users across the region at all times. I believe the views of all transport users should be heard and considered in order to ensure an effective, fully integrated and agreed transport plan is implemented in the West Midlands.

I would be very happy, and would expect to engage fully with MAG throughout this process.
